This research aims: (1) identifying how the mangrove area at the village of Muara Bengalon has been so far utilized or exploited; (2) estimating the today’s total economic value of the ecosystem of mangrove area; (3) finding out and thus determining a pattern of mangrove area’s utilization that is well-combined with the brackishwater pondendeavors so that it will generate the highest Net Present Value (NPV).
The field research was undertaken from August 2013 to January 2007. The object being researched was the mangrove area at the Village of Muara Bengalon. Respondents to the research were determined according to an disproporsionate stratified random sampling technique. Those respondents could be categorized as 87 respondents who, at the time of the research, took direct benefits from the area and 85 other respondents who took benefits from the mere existence of the mangrove area in the village of Muara Bengalon. The result of this research showed that the yearly benefits of the ecosystem of mangrove area at the village of Muara Bengalon could be further grouped into: (1) direct benefit of Rp 2,114,916,195; (2) indirect benefits of Rp17,212,313; (3) optional benefits of Rp41,909,175;(4) existence benefits of Rp1,537,500,000. Meanwhile, the total economic value of the mangrove area with total width of 307.5 ha and brackishwater pond 1,008 ha in width was Rp3,711,537,683 per year. The utilization of the mangrove area when combined with brackishwater pondendeavors as shown by scenario pattern a (the today’s condition), where the width of the fishpond is 1,008.85 ha and the width of the mangrove area is 307.5 ha, term of time of 20 year and opportunity cost of capital rate at 10% generates net present value (NPV) that is higher than any other scenarios.
One way to protect the rest of the mangrove area this research suggests is not to open new brackishwater pondin the area. The direct benefits can be bolstered by rehabilitating the brackishwater pondthat are so far less productive and make them produce more.
