The purpose of the study are: (1) to identify the areas prone to flooding and its causes in Loa Buah, (2) to prepare a technical planning document of flood control building in accordance with the conditions of the current development, (3) to plan the implementation of flood control in Loa Buah region so that it can be implemented stepwise by the relevant parties, and (4) to develop a planning document and detailed design of river normalization as well as the flood control building.
This study lasted for four months, at Loa Buah region, Sungai Kunjang sub district of Samarinda Municipality, East Kalimantan.The study results showed that: (1) The problem of flooding in the study area are caused by natural factors, namely the existence of high rainfall, physiographic location of the flood is lowland, and the human factors, in this case is land clearing at upstream areas, such as mining activities, building crossing construction (culvert at home building) are not in accordance with the dimensions of the river, and building houses along the river which is floodplains; (2) simulation results revealed flood management that provide a large reduction of flood discharge is to make the building dam on the left Loa Buah river and normalization of drainage channels as well as the connection to the right Loa Buah river where the channel went straight into Mahakam river. Reduction of flood discharge that occurs is equal to 64.13%. The selected flood control handlings are river normalization, normalization of drainage channels, connecting with the right Loa Buah river where the channel went straight into Mahakam river, and building a reservoir at the former coal mining ponds; and (3) the results of topographic mapping of trase sungai and reservoir location, as well as the hydrological analysis of return period of 100 years, the storage capacity amounted to 154,755 m3 reservoir with an inundation area of 6.6 ha.
