The research objective is to: (1) Study the potential of sago plants in the study area; (2) To identify aspects of production and post-harvest of sago crop development in the study area; (3) To identify the problems in the upstream and downs development of sago in the study area; and (4) Provide input and suggestions related to the sustainable development of sago plants in the study area. This study was conducted over three months (February 2015 - April 2015), starting from the preparation of research until the writing of research reports. It was carried out in Paser Regency, namely in the district capital (Tanah Grogot or currently known as Tanah Paser) and villages that have good potential for sago plant development. Secondary data were obtained from relevant agencies such as the Food Crops Agency, Commerce Agency, Bappeda, Rural Development Office, BPS of Paser Regency, and BPS of East Kalimantan Province. Meanwhile, the primary data obtained through observations and interviews with sago farming communities, existing institutional apparatus such as the field agricultural officers, KUD, commerce and industrial officer, and sago processing industry. The data collected is then analyzed descriptively according to the grouping or substance data. The analysis is done by making a comparative findings in the field of the aspects of best management practices for crop management of sago. The results revealed that: (1) Having regard to the total area of cultivation, the level of productivity of the plantation workforce, and pay attention to the tendency of a decreasing level of management, then the condition of sago palm in Paser was currently said as a potential food crop alternatives that was marginalized or abandoned; (2) Management of sago palm in Paser still done conventionally and post harvest is still done in a simple and manual, and not much attention to aspects of business efficiency and hygiene for sago products to be sold; and (3) Problems encountered among other were processes of production systems that still do not support the improvement of optimal growth and development of plants and the rules of best management practices. In addition, from the non-technical aspects, there is no government policy related to the establishment or protection areas designated for centers of crop production, including for this sago plant.
