Farmer preference on local rice varieties is important to consider in effort for assembling new superior varieties. The aim of this research was to know farmer preference on specific characteristic of local rice on tidal swamp area of South Kalimantan, as initial step in assembling new superior varieties based on local varieties. The activity was carried out since March-Mei, 2009 at tidal swamp area of Tanah Laut and Barito Kuala Regencies, South Kalimantan. The activity was done by interview method to respondent (10 people for each districts) based on question list. Data were analized by descriptive analysis. There are 13 varieties in Kurau, 11 varieties in Bumi Makmur, 26 varities in Tabunganen, and 12 varieties in Barambai. Farmer preference on local varities were caused by ease of cultivation, minimum input for production, and high sale price, plus small size of seeds and taste of rice that are “pera” (high amilose content). Superior-Local (S-L) planting pattern has been applied in all districts, except in Tabunganen. In other hand, one time planting pattern (local varieties) is much left and exist in all districts.
